The Toronto Central Palliative Care Network is pleased to present an international session featuring Dr. Sandy Buchman, Dr. Kevin Bezanson, and Mr. Dalitso Mzinganjira. In this exciting session, our speakers will present on how hospice palliative care is delivered in Malawi, the successes and challenges in hospice palliative care, and thoughts on the necessary drivers to advancing such care in Malawi.

This session is open to the entire network, their staff, board members, partners, and friends.We welcome and encourage all to come!

Speaker Biographies

 

Dr. Sandy Buchman

Dr Sandy Buchman holds the MD from Canada’s McMaster University. He completed his Family Medicine Residency training at the University of Toronto. He practiced comprehensive Family Medicine in Mississauga for 21 years with special interest in Palliative Care, HIV/AIDS and Global Health. His experience includes volunteering in South America and Africa. He’s currently a full-time Palliative Care Physician with the Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care doing home-based end-of-life care. He’s the Regional Primary Care Lead in Toronto Central Local Health Integration Network for Cancer Care Ontario. He’s one of two Family Medicine Representatives on the Clinical Services Leadership Team of the Toronto Central Local Health Integration Network. He’s the Honorary Secretary Treasurer on the National Executive of the College of Family Physicians of Canada. He’s an Assistant Professor in the Departments of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto and McMaster University.

Mr. Dalitso Mzinganjira

Dalitso is a Malawian male palliative care specialist, and is currently working as a lead research nurse at the UNC-Project/ Lighthouse Clinic, Lilongwe, Malawi . Since palliation in Malawi is still a very new concept, he would like to connect with the hospice palliative care system in the Toronto Central region to gain hands-on experience at an already advanced palliative care site as a way of improving his skills and knowledge in order to impart the experience and knowledge on his colleagues.
